Introducing the Support for Independent Retail Campaign
The Support for Independent Retail campaign is a year-round source of support, advice, ideas and inspiration for independent retailers across the UK. It's aim is to help independent retailers and those who serve consumers to get and stay open for business!
Founded by Retail Expert, Clare Rayner
, the campaign aims to help independent retailers and consumer-facing small businesses to get and stay open for business
. We receive no government funding and, until 2015, relied solely on sponsorship and goodwill.
Our primary activities include our three annual events - Independent Retailer Month, Enjoy an Independent Easter and Celebrate an Independent Christmas - and our hugely popular, online Independent Shops directory
Local authorities, councils, town teams, BIDs and committed groups of retailers are invited to buy the rights to a 'Support for Independent Retail campaign licence'
, granting them exclusive access to event resources and support from our team and enabling them to create, manage and succeed with our three annual events.
In addition to our town centre based activities we provide free-of-charge help and advice for independent retailers
. For those interested in supporting the campaign who are not able to run events in their community, you might also want to [how to sponsor us.
Pledge Your Support for Independent Retail
The CLES (Centre for Local Economic Strategies) conducted some research for FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) about the value of £1.00 spent locally - the results were compelling, sufficient to convince most people that when they shop locally, they are genuinely having a positive impact on their community!
They discovered that for every £1.00 spent locally, around 50p-70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy. For the same £1.00 spent out of town or online, only 5p trickles back to the local community.
If small business owners set an example by shopping for their supplies locally, their customers are bound to recognise their actions and follow suit. When people realise and appreciate the impact that their choice of where to spend can have, we believe that consumers will make more effort to spend with local independent businesses.
That's why we want both consumers and retailers to pledge their support for independent retail.
